Critical Essay Cross Cultural Communication and Practice

Question: 1. What are the standards of socially proper or socially delicate development?2. How do these identify with improvement hypothesis and practice generally?3. How may these standards be applied by and by for the most part inside your objective network (you might need to concentrate in on your ideal expert territory of work here)4. What may upgrade your ability as a socially skillful advancement specialist in this unique circumstance? Answers: Presentation Culturally diverse correspondence is alluded as the captivating region that has attempted to enable the comprehension about the people groups originating from the distinctive social foundations and those impart, look at and broaden the courses (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). In the last work I have referenced that I have a place with the Hindu religion and filling in as the structural architect in one of the worldwide association situated in New Delhi. Its prominent that in the nation like India, there are numerous strict networks, and cross culture s the work place has gotten very normal (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). In the western nations they have the solid and stable culture; what other place in India we have for the most part insecure just as respectably less lenient culture (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). There are numerous strict networks existing in the nation that has improved the way of life and correspondence rehearses in the nation, yet at the same time t he principle center is put over its headway and the turns of events (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). With the progressions coming in the worldwide social changes, the idea of globalization has expanded, and made the worldwide business as their need to take the worldwide organizations to grab hold of the upper hand (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). The socially touchy networks play numerous difficulties at the working environment, and its a test to deal with this sort of workforce (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). I have chosen Islam as my objective culture, as in India there are numerous Muslims living in the nation. Dealing with the distinctions in the objective culture isn't simple as they fluctuate in dialects, societies and in their custom and overseeing them in global organizations isn't simple (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). The assorted variety in the HR inside the organization identifies with the social arrangement, and yet it impacts the character just as brain science of the partners (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). The objective culture sleeted by me is Mus lim culture. Culture in country progresses its correspondence and the expanded culture at the work environment likewise offers numerous chances of adapting and yet there are numerous disadvantages of it, as modifying with individuals from various foundations isn't so natural (Blum-Kulka, House and Kasper 1989). 1. Socially delicate improvement in target culture India is considered as the spot having the high social legacy that impacts the people groups innovation (Davis 2009). Through India is considered as the most noteworthy business center in the worldwide exchange business, yet at the same time, it gets trying for the organizations in adjust with the social move in the nation (Carbaugh 2013). The business in the India holds the social behaviors alongside morals, which is required by the worldwide partnerships to adjust with both adaptability and resistance (Davis 2009). The India is the nation with differentiated societies, and in which culture is totally variation in setting of characteristic in which they ask, religion, and appearance, welcome, condition of working environment, conduct, correspondence, and womens working at the work environment, propensities for drinking, and eating (Carbaugh 2013). In this manner, the worldwide organizations that are working together in India require to adjust with the social standards in setting of advertising and different exercises of activities; consequently, they have to follow the lawful commitments and furthermore need to make the market dedication towards the organization through expanding the sentiment of belongingness (Rogers and Shoemaker 1971). Organizations in India need to confront different issues primarily the difficulties of cross culture in setting of the work environment condition and for directing the showcasing exercises with the clients of host nation; the difficulties of culture connect with the language, religion, ladies working in workplaces, working style, appearances, conduct just as disposition (Rogers and Shoemaker 1971). Every one of these components pay significant job in the way of life of an association and the reliability, and consumer loyalty as the neighborhood national that attempts to lean toward those brands where they could really trust and feel the belongingness and the association that could interface with more clients (Rogers and Shoemaker 1971). Islam is one of the significant religions rehearsed in India and the equivalent incorporates the various parts of the life in the nation (Rogers and Shoemaker 1971). This confidence of Islam puts light on the liberality of the religion, alongside unobtrusiveness and regard in the business that is completely inverse of the hierarchical culture situated in USA (Rogers and Shoemaker 1971). The individual regard just as respect is the most noticeable and incomparable in the way of life of Islam and the conversations about the business are really done through the help of the backhanded correspondence style (Gudykunst 2003). Chain of command in the associations is considered as the key idea in the India that concentrations over the methodology of top down for taking the choices, specialists and for capacity to unify to the one individual (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). On account of direct correspondence, they attempt to leave the less space in correlation with the way of life of the association, yet the Islam gives high an incentive towards the affability in the business (Gudykunst 2003). Next factor identifies with ladies shaking hands in the gatherings is really confined, and ladies attempt to abstain from warmly greeting the men (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). Its prominent that the individual status in the organization is viewed as significant and the top indiv idual is welcomed first (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). Friendliness is likewise considered as the matter of pride in the Islamic culture and they even attempt to save the respect to have the individual or association (Gudykunst 2003). The way of life of India is in reality exceptionally huge in setting of various factors, and clothing is the most significant factors in the Islamic culture (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). Ladies need to wear the Abaya that spread their body. Culture in India attempts to start the correspondence that is really conclusive in its tendency (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). At specific focuses the assorted variety at the working environment, there are sure basic components that bolsters in having the fruitful correspondence with the affiliations (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). By considering the experience of the Ting-Toomey and Chung, it very well may be referenced that the various leveled arrangement in the organizations it gets basic to include the equivalent gratefulness inside the way of life, alongside religion worth and certainty (Ting-Toomey and Chung 2012). For instance, while working in the structural building organization there is numerous individuals who originate from various religions who receive their specific arrangement of practices social orders and points of view (Scollon, Scollon and Jones 2011). While this can be considered as basic in having the relationship to give ensure, as it gives equivalent organization and furthermore give space in each gathering through breaking the legitimate objective (Ting-Toomey and Chung 2012). It is likewise seen that because of the social complexities in insights; consequently, they are not passed on appropriately, and there are numerous explanations behind it, for instance a specialist who originates from the Hindu religion may chat with the vernaculars, what other place the individual from the Islamic culture probably won't do likewise (Groeschl 2003). These variables come in the perplexity because of the vernacular dumbfound that regularly comes in the errors which stops by giving the information (Ting-Toomey and Chung 2012). It is investigated that there are three advancement process phases of socially delicate networks, which incorporates ineptitude, and social capability through having different psychological, talented based and full of feeling components (Groeschl 2003). The Groeschl attempts to keep up the fundamental effects of the conveyed benefits through the assistance of experts that are very delicate, clumsy, or socially skillful and are likewise harming, gainful, just as impartial (Groeschl 2003). Nonetheless, there is a point by point clarification of the procedure that is given through Lung-Tan and Yuan-Ho (2005), under which they incorporates six phases of the socially touchy turn of events (Lung-Tan and Yuan-Ho 2005). Along these lines experts, for example, frameworks and association, advance through the social limit, social damaging tendency, social pre-capability, social visual deficiency, social capability, just as social skill (Lung-Tan and Yuan-Ho 2005). According to Hofstede (1984), for advancing with the specialists one require to welcome the assorted variety of culture at the work environment and ought to likewise attempt to recognize the inclinations of culture and should know about what happens when the two culture collaborate with one another (Hofstede 1984). Besides, the activities taken by them have to attempt the social foundation of each individual working in global organization (Gray 1988). 2. Advancement hypothesis There are numerous specialists and the researchers who are attempting to make the effect on the distinctions lying in the cross culture and on the conduct of the individuals so as to help them in diminishing the dangers of intercultural of the worldwide business (Gray 1988). As indicated by the originator of Intercultural Development Institute of research, it is accepted that there are many experienced individual, who needs to confront the social contrasts and there are numerous individuals who has attempted to build up the intercultural competenc

Brown, John

Brown, John Brown, John, 1800â€"1859, American abolitionist, b. Torrington, Conn. He spent his boyhood in Ohio. Before he became prominent in the 1850s, his life had been a succession of business failures in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. An ardent abolitionist (he once kept a station on the Underground Railroad at Richmond, Pa.) and a believer in the equality of the races, he consecrated (1837) his life to the destruction of slavery. Brown settled (1855) with five of his sons in Kansas to help secure the territory's entry as a free state. He became captain of the colony on the Osawatomie River. The success of the proslavery forces in violent attacks on antislavery leaders, and particularly in their sack of Lawrence , aroused Brown, and in order to cause a restraining fear in 1856 he, with four of his sons, a son-in-law, and two other men, savagely murdered five proslavery men living on the banks of the Pottawatomie Creek. In this he asserted he was an instrument in the hand of God. His exploits as a leader of an antislavery band received wide publicity, especially in abolitionist journals, and as Old Brown of Osawatomie he became nationally known. Late in 1857 he began to enlist men for a project that he apparently had considered for some time and that took definite form at a convention of his followers held at Chatham, Ont., the next spring. He planned to liberate the slaves through armed intervention by establishing a stronghold in the Southern mountains to which the slaves and free blacks could flee and from which further insurrections could be stirred up. Early in 1859, Brown rented a farm near Harpers Ferry, Va. (now W.Va.), and there collected his followers and a cache of arms. On the night of Oct. 16 he, two of his sons, and 19 other followers crossed the Potomac and without much resistance captured the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, made the inhabitants prisoners, and took general possession of the town. Strangely enough, he then mer ely settled down, while the aroused local militia blocked his escape. That night a company of U.S. marines, commanded by Col. Robert E. Lee, arrived, and in the morning they assaulted the engine house of the armory into which Brown's force had retired. In the resulting battle, 10 of Brown's men were killed, and Brown himself was wounded. News of the raid aroused wild fears in the South and came as a great shock to the North. On Dec. 2, 1859, Brown was hanged at Charles Town. His dignified conduct and the sincerity of his calm defense during the trial won him sympathy in the North and led him to be widely regarded as a hero and a martyr. The Civil War broke out just over a year after the raid. The standard contemporary account is contained in The Life, Trial and Execution of Captain John Brown (1859, repr. 1969). The Learning Capabilities Through Video Games - 954 Words

The next topic we will cover is the part that we are most excited about. The console will have the ability to educate and train students, military personnel, and police force. I will also be discussing the various peripherals we have developed to aid in education and training. We have gotten in contact with many different educators to ask what they thought about the learning capability through video games. †Video games are playing an increasing role in school curricula as teachers seek to deliver core lessons such as math and reading—not to mention new skills such as computer programming—in a format that holds their students’ interests. Some herald this gamification of education as the way of the future and a tool that allows students to take a more active role in learning as they develop the technology skills they need to succeed throughout their academic and professional careers.† (Malykhina 1) Most all of these educators had flashbacks to times when they played games such as â€Å"School House Rock† and â€Å"The Oregon Trail† either when they were in school or while teaching in their early years. We were reassured that they thought gaming could be used a pivotal tool in the educating of young students. Electrical Engineering And The Field Of Engineering

Electrical Engineering is a well-respected and growing field of engineering that centers on the practical application of electricity, electromagnetism and electronics. The field is of considerable necessity to modern life and infrastructure, having applications in many diverse branches of modern life. Some of these include telecommunications, energy and power distribution, transportation, manufacturing and consumer electronics. In this report we will go over the education and coursework requirements, fields of the industry, the work environment, salary, tools of the trade, and professional organizations of electrical engineers. According to Frederick Terman; Electrical Engineering as a discipline first appeared in the United States during the early 1880’s as classes in physics and energy flows intended to prepare students to enter the new and fast growing electrical manufacture industry. As the industry grew, EE education followed. Within ten years the discipline made a place for itself along the more classical engineering departments. An example of the industry’s adaptability to change would be the industry before and after the First World War. Before WWI, work in the industry was concentrated primarily on the distribution of power, building electric infrastructure using the properties of AC and DC circuits. Also before WWI, many students did not opt to take on graduate work. Instead, students typically would obtain a Bachelor’s of Science and learn practical skills inShow MoreRelatedElectrical Engineering And The Field Of Engineering Essay1855 Words   |  8 PagesScience, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the fourth is Finance, and fifth is Information Technology. Argumentative Essay On Snowflakes - 2010 Words

Many adults from older generations like the Baby Boomers (born 1946 -1964) and Generation X (born 1961-1981) have been accusing Millennial’s of being snowflakes. You may be used to the word snowflake being defined as â€Å"one of the small, feathery masses or flakes in which snow falls†(Snowflake). According to Oxford Dictionaries, a snowflake today is â€Å"An overly sensitive or easily offended person, or one who believes they are entitled to special treatment on account of their supposedly unique characteristics†(Snowflake). There have been many arguments on Millennial’s and whether they have become, as Claire Fox indicated, â€Å"Generation Snowflake†(Fox, P.16). Authors like, Simon Sinek, Mark Hill, Marc A. Thiessen, Jessica M. Goldstein, and Claire†¦show more content†¦A lot of people believe the term â€Å"snowflake† originated in Chuck Palahniuk’s book, Fight Club, when a member of Project Mayhem tells the other member s, â€Å"You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone, and we are all part of the same compost pile†(No, Snowflake as a Slang Term Did Not Begin with Fight Club, P. 5). But, this term originated as early as the 1860s when it was defined as, â€Å"a person who was opposed to the abolition of slavery—the implication of the name being that such people valued white people over black people†(No, Snowflake as a Slang Term Did Not Begin with Fight Club, P.2). A little over a millennium later, in the 1970s, this term was used to describe â€Å"a white man or for a black man who was seen as acting white†(No, Snowflake as a Slang Term Did Not Begin with Fight Club, P.8). The term snowflake has evolved through a long period of time and it is now known to be a highly offensive insult. There have been many authors who have written their thoughts on Millennial’s, what a snowflake is defined to be, and if toda ys generation can be considered â€Å"Generation Snowflake† (Fox, P.16). According to â€Å"Millennials in the Workplace†, Simon Sinek states that a snowflake is â€Å"entitled and narcissistic, self interested, unfocused and lazy†(Sinek, P.1). The Elderly Should Receive More Geographical Attention

The elderly are a rapidly growing demographic group, estimated to reach 16.9 million people by 2035 in the UK due to low fertility rates, improved healthcare and thus longer life expectancy (Rutherford 2012). This is problematic as many elderly people experience multiple exclusion (Age Concern England 2008), which intensifies once over 75 years of age (De Markokos 2008). This is due to the ‘social model’, whereby as ageing occurs the elderly progressively withdraw from society, especially in Western cultures after retirement age (Gregory et al. 2009 p.12) leading to high dependency rates (Rutherford 2012). However, it is important to recognise that the elderly are not a homogenous group due to different life courses as a result of post modernity fracturing old age (Pain 2001 p.144). Nevertheless, the elderly should receive more geographical attention because attention has predominantly focused on the geography of children (Gregory et al. 2009 p.13) despite there being a projected 4 million more elderly people than youths by 2035 (Rutherford 2012). The elderly that are more at risk of isolation include those who reside in urban areas (Dwyer and Hardill 2011), as urban life damages kinship bonds and personal relationships (Simmel 1903). Around half of the elderly over 80 years old report frequent isolation (Dykstra 2009), so prefer to spend more time in the private sphere, notably the home (AARP 1996) as it possesses memories and nostalgia (Gregory et al. 2009 p.340) thusShow MoreRelatedThe Life of a Pediatrician1068 Words   |  5 PagesChoosing a career is more of a personal decision. Problem: Feeling insecure about not being intelligent enough compared to my classmates. Phase 1: Self-observation I have been an average student all my life, and I am aware that at times I feel insecure and doubt my own abilities to be able to complete the required tasks and assignments in my classes to be able to finish this program. When an instructor gives out assignments or projects I always ask myself whether I could do it or not, most of the time I feel I can’t. We will write a custom essay sample on Meichenbaum’s Self-instructional training or any similar topic only for you Order Now Then when during class discussions or debates I listen to my classmates and I wonder how eloquently they are able to share their thoughts and argue their opinions. I often listen to myself and my internal dialogue had been how unsure I am of my answers, how I fear talking in front of my classmates because I might not be able to give the correct answer. I want to be able to change this behavior and negative self-perception; I want to be more confident and smart in class. Phase 2: Starting a new internal dialogue According to Meichenbaum, the second stage in the behavioral change process is to start a new internal dialogue that is not in accordance with the old negative internal dialogue. The client can work with this new internal dialogue with the therapist, but I guess I could do it without the help of the therapist. I could basically throw rebuttals to my negative internal dialogues. If for example, I say I am not smart, then my new internal dialogue would be that I always had good grades, I never failed a course and that is being smart. I could also say to myself that there will always be people who are better than me and that I am better than others too. Phase 3: Learning a new skill In this phase, the client learns new behaviors to cope with the negative internal dialogues and to be able to learn skills that would bring about behavior change. For me, I could probably learn how to be able to speak more confidently and I could do that by observing how my classmates put their thoughts together and how they deliver it in class. I could buy a book about public speaking or better communication skills and learn it. I could also ask my classmates their strategies for studying and maybe learn those strategies to be able to study better and have higher grades. Biography of the author Essay Example For Students

Biography of the author Essay J.B. Priestley was born in Bradford, Yorkshire on 13th September 1894. J.B. Priestley became a clerk in a local wool firm and was very interested in politics. In 1914 he joined the infantry, he was nearly killed on at least one occasion. J.B Priestley left the army in 1919. J.B Priestley was a very successful as an essayist and novelist. J.B Priestley broadcasted regularly for the BBC giving personal reflections of the conditions of wartime. Very popular with listeners but not the BBC, who were put under pressure from the Ministry of Information and the BBC cancelled the talks because he was considered to be too critical of the government. Priestley wrote 40 plays and An Inspector Calls was written in 1945. The play is set in 1912 in an imaginary place called Brumley. Just before the World War I. Its a realist play, the story takes place in real time. When each act stops its as if time stands still. The new act opens on exactly the same scene as the end of the old one. In An Inspector Calls there is a message about equality and discrimination. J.B. Priestley did this purposely. It is shown quite clearly in this play, how strong the separations between different classes were and how the upper class people treated the working class and how little we realised that we are responsible for others. Whilst Inspector Goole was at the Birling familys house, they all learnt that they had played a part in Eva Smith/Daisy Renton life, which lead to her death. They discover each others faults i.e. Mr. Birling was greedy- he sacked Eva when she asked for a raise, Sheila was jealous and envious of Eva when a hat that she wanted suited Eva better than her it just suited her, Mrs Birling was prejudiced- she refused to help this poor girl at a time when she most needed it and Eric showed his immaturity and irresponsibility-he stole money to support Eva after he realised that Eva was pregnant with his child. They learnt that there is a certain amount that people can take until they are pushed to their limits and do something irrational. The Birlings represents the upper class. They are in charge, they can hire and fire those of the working class and they treated the working class every badly. The workers did not have employment protection laws or health and safety laws. Eva represents the women of the working class quite well due to the fact that she continued to search for a job after she was sacked from two jobs in a short period, then made homeless and finally pregnant. These things, which happened to Eva, happened to many people at that time. Mr. Birlings attitude towards his workers is not in a manner that shows he cares about their equality or even as people. He feels the workers are getting greedy when they asked for a raise, since he believes hes paying them more than they deserve. It is revealed to us that at the time there were no rights for working people. They were paid very little, 1.12 per week; their weekly saving was about 29p (twenty-five shillings).  In the inspectors final speech it is clearly a warning, that if they continue the way they are now, the outcome will not be good at all:  If men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. In the Inspectors final speech he is very emotional and uses his body language to show how he feels about the matter surveys them sardonically and he is very forthright about who started the sequence of events that cost Eva Smith her life You started it. The Inspector represents the voice of Priestly. He believes in community and if we dont work together then disaster is inevitable. Priestlys main aim in the play was to show what would happen if we did not work together as a community and take responsibility for each other. Blood and anguish for the audience this refers to the war which they had just experienced but in the Inspectors speech it is a warning of what is to come. .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .postImageUrl , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:hover , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:visited , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:active { border:0!important; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:active , .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uafc3cd8d28db45281b51ef80321e7b7d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Scarlet Letter Essay SummaryAt the end we see that the new generation (Sheila and Eric) learned their lesson and showed that they understood what they did, and wanted to change to become better people. The old generation (Mr and Mrs. Birling) were shown what they could lead someone to do, and started to show that they would change. As soon as they found out that no-one was admitted into the mortuary that night, they acted as if nothing happened, so they learned nothing and wanted to continue with their way of life as it was before that night. I think that Priestley portrays this as a play because it would be more interesting to audiences than reading a political pamphlet. At the time the audience would be middle class people since they had the wealth to have a privilege. In addition they would have just experienced the deprivations of World War II. Therefore they would recognize the ignorance and bigotry of the Birling family.  On reflection, perhaps Sheila does deserve more blame than her father. Although Sheila shows more remorse than Arthur her reasons for getting Eva sacked are less valid. Arthur saw Eva as a leader of troublemakers who could disrupt his production. Sheila however got rid of her for a far less important reason caused by her own temper and jealousy.  The moral of An Inspector Calls is that no matter what class we are we are all equal and that we must work together. Priestly wanted to get this moral across, I think he did, but unfortunately there will always be people like the Birlings.

Langston Hughes-the Voice of African Americans Essay Example

Langston Hughes-the Voice of African Americans Essay Langston Hughes- The Voice of African Americans â€Å"The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain†, â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers†, â€Å"Danse Africaine† , and â€Å"I, Too† by Langston Hughes are representative of Hughes ability to capture the vast experience of being black in America. Hughes’ ability to define African American heritage and the daily experience of being black in America through poetry and essays helped move the Harlem Renaissance into the forefront of American Literature. For Hughes, being African American meant many different things. As an African American each day was different and through the years Hughes’ experiences continued to allow him to relate what it meant to be black in America. Whether it was pride in one’s heritage or anger about racism; Hughes’s poetry was able to capture the feelings of the many blacks who were dealing with the issue of being black, but wanted to fit into â€Å"white Americaâ€Å". In Huges essay the negro artist, he captured the essence of blacks looking at themselves through the eyes of white America â€Å"But this is the mountain standing in the way of any true Negro art in America—this urge within the race toward whiteness, the desire to pour racial individuality into the mold of American standardization, and to be as little Negro and as much American as possible. . Hughes felt the need to address the racism and prejudice that existed in America. Though Hughes was very optimistic about America and its ability to improve racial tensions the reality of racism was hard to ignore. The servant who is sent away to the kitchen whenever company comes allows the reader to understand Hughes’ view of America and its attitude toward African Americans. Hughes examines the segregation of America and the idea that change is possible. The actions of the servant reveal the struggle of African Americans as a people who want to be equal to other Americans. The title of I, Too itself suggests that the speaker of the poem believes that he is also an America. The speaker includes himself as one of the many who â€Å"sings America† (line 1). The idea that one â€Å"sings America† reveals a pride in being a citizen of the United States of America. The speaker aware of his â€Å"two-ness,† his two identities of being black and American, expresses the anger of knowing that many people do not acknowledge him as an American. For this reason Hughes allows the speaker a response to those who do not believe blacks to be Americans worthy of equal opportunities and rights. The speaker identifies himself also as the darker brother (line 2) revealing that he is black (dark skinned) while connecting himself to white Americans who are lighter in complexion. The use of the word ‘brother† helps the speaker to assert that he believes that he is an American symbolizing the common bond he shares with whites. The speaker goes on to say that he is sent away to the kitchen by his employers when company arrives. He implies that he is sent away because â€Å"they† (his white employers) believe his not worthy of being at the table when others are dinning. The inferiority that the speaker feels suggests the feelings of many African Americans who experience racism and prejudice. The speaker then addresses the unfair treatment by his employers in his response in lines 5-7 â€Å"But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. † The speaker laughs at the ridiculousness of his employer’s actions. The speaker seems amused that his employers believe that by keeping him in the kitchen they can forget his presence. This line allows Hughes’ message to be heard. Hughes sends a message to America that the â€Å"darker brother† or African Americans will continue to fight racism and prejudice. The speaker who symbolizes all African Americans would not be content with inequality and injustice. Hughes not only provides readers with the problem in America but also what he believes is the appropriate response to the unfair treatment of African Americans. Hughes provides an optimistic view of the future of the African American race by giving the speaker hope for better treatment from his employers. â€Å"Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes† allowing the speaker to envision a day when America would be a place of equality and fair treatment of all people. Hughes word choice lends itself to the frustration that many African Americans felt in terms of racism. The word â€Å"dare† in line 11 suggests that one day the act of ordering the speaker to eat in the kitchen would be condemned. Hughes provides an idea for what will one day happen to those who do not believe in the value of blacks as people or American citizens. In line 15 the speaker says â€Å"They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed. † Hughes seems to infer that once whites begin to recognize the value of African Americans as people and citizens they will be ashamed of the way they have treated them. The last line brings to life Hughes idea of a new America; a place where a black person can say with pride and a sense of belonging â€Å"I, too am America. † If I, Too allowed Hughes to reveal an African American’s desire to be a proud American equal to white citizens The Negro Speaks of Rivers reveals the part of the African American identity that celebrates the strength and pride of an African heritage. â€Å"The sun was setting as the train reached St. Louis and began the long passage from Illinois across the Mississippi and into Missouri, where Hughes had been born. The beauty of the hour and the settingthe great muddy river glinting in the sun, the banked and tinted summer clouds, the rush of the train toward the dark, all touched an adolescent sensibility tender after the gloomy day. The sense of beauty and death, of hope and despair, fused in his imagination. A phrase came to him, then a sentence. Drawing an envelope from his pocket, he began to scribble. In a few minutes Langston had finished a poem. † (Rampersand, 1988) Hughes wrote The Negro Speaks of Rivers at 17 and dedicated the poem to W. E. B. Dubois. Though he was young and inexperienced as a writer; the poem revealed Hughes’ pride in his roots and the beginning of a legacy of poetry for African Americans. Hughes suggests that four rivers- the Euphrates, the Congo, the Nile, and the Mississippi have helped to cultivate black people throughout the years. The Negro Speaks of Rivers is quite different from other poems in that Hughes connects all black people through their African heritage. The poem spans over years of blacks in history who benefit from a heritage that has allowed the speaker to believe that his â€Å"soul has grown deep like the rivers† (Hughes, 1926). Hughes lists the rivers in their historical order which helps the reader to understand the legacy of the rivers that have shaped people of African descent. As each river is revealed in the poem the speaker’s soul grows deeper symbolizing a race of people who become stronger throughout history. From the building of pyramids to the end of slavery the poem seeks to show the connection Hughes felt to his ancestors. Hughes legacy of providing a voice for African Americans continued throughout his career. In 1951 nearly two decades after writing I, Too in which he addressed the issue of racism Hughes revisited the pain associated with being African American in Theme for English B. Hughes explores the relationship between an African American student and his white teacher. The poem reveals how race affects the African American’s self-identity. The speaker of the poem first reveals his instructor’s command â€Å"Go home and write a page tonight/ And let that page come out of you-Then, it will be true† (Hughes, 1951). The student questions the assignment revealing his hesitation to complete it. In the next stanza Hughes reveals the speaker’s identity. The speaker reveals that he is a colored college student; and that he is the only colored student in class. This assertion helps the reader to understand that this student believes that he is different from his peers and his instructor because of his race. As the speaker ponders his age and his experiences he realizes some of the things that reveal his self-identity. As the speaker continues he lists the many things that contribute to his identity. In lines 24 and 25 the speaker even recognizes that in some ways he is like people from other races. In his self-analysis the speaker realizes that though he is not white and his instructor is white he need not avoid what is true about their relationship. The truth is that they are both American as Hughes state in line 33 and there are times when African Americans do not want to be associated with white Americans and vice versa. The speaker accepts his reality and is made aware that in being African American he is able to learn from his white instructor. The speaker seems more satisfied when he realizes that the instructor can learn from him as well. In all three poems Hughes accomplished the task of giving African Americas a poetic voice. This voice allowed the pride of one’s heritage, the anger and frustration about social injustices, and the pain associated with being African American to become a part of American Literature. Hughes’ ability to draw from his experiences and those of the people knew gave him a range of topics for his work. Hughes desire to uplift the African American race is evident in most of his work. Through his poems I, Too, The Negro Speaks of Rivers, and Theme for English B Hughes gives African Americans reasons to feel proud of who they are and what they contribute to society.

Many believe that it has its merits; however there are a few noisy people who believe that speech pathology is a useless ambition. They believe that children suffering from a speech disorder will eventually grow out of it. However, that goes along with the territory of being a relatively new medical profession. It first surfaced in the late 1940s, after World War II. Many soldiers returned from the frontlines with head wounds that limited speech. Teachers, neurologists, and other doctors wanted to help the injured men, and a profession was born (Enderby and Emerson 1). Speech pathologists work with people who cannot speak clearly or at all. Individual Design report -Technology Integration Coursework

Individual Design report -Technology Integration - Coursework Example The artefact itself will be the size of an average human torso, which will be placed on a square platform and will be encased in a glass box of about six feet height and three feet width on all sides. Glass panels on all sides will be electric blue in colour and embedded with LED lightning streaks panelled on the sides and back, which can play different patterns of lightning on predetermined intervals or through sensor detection as people pass by and on-off switch will be controlled both through pre-programmed computer system within the platform of the artefact. The front side will be plain glass with no embellishments to afford a clear view. The female form will be rendered in very light cream colour to allow better transparency. The artefact will be facing the sidewalk or road so that it receives maximum view. The female has a cigarette packet in her left hand and a lighted cigarette between the fingers of her right hand. Every time she brings the cigarette to her mouth and takes a drag, the tip will glow and her lungs will be displayed. As she takes out the cigarette from her mouth and brings the hand down, her lungs will darken and the light will fade out. An audio will play, â€Å"Puffing out Your Lungs?† and simultaneously the lightning streaks will illuminate, playing different patterns on all sides and, at the same time, the words of the audio will appear on the front panel. Once the entire series of action is completed, it will repeat only when a passerby approaches within the radius of five metres, or again at a predetermined interval as per the computer programme. When placed on busy roadsides and other areas in future, the artefact will cater for appropriate changes depending on the locations where these will be placed and will also introduce sensors and other appropriate systems for vehicles passing by. During the intervals between the actions, the system will play some mild music. Evaluation: The main objective of this project is to attract the attention of the public to the health hazards of behaviours such as smoking. The glasswork of the design and the lighting effects are intended for attracting and engaging the public who are the audience for this campaign. LED embedding in glass panels is a rather recently developed technology that has immense potential in attracting attention. The technology involves the use of a â€Å"sustainable active glass system,† which can diffuse an array of vibrant colour lights emanating from LEDs and can be operated through electronic programming (LED in Glass 2011:2). The following diagram will illustrate the system: (LED in Glass 2011) This system allows the emission of light from several multicoloured LED strips through glass edges and the light gets â€Å"refracted out of the front and back† (2). The same technology will be used for the burning tip of the cigarette, which will be triggered on the movement of the arm. This technology offers immense possibility of alig ning a wide range of design, colour and light features into glass and can be highly appealing to the audience, especially during night times. The lightning streaks will be in deep orange colour that will enable visibility from distance and also catch the immediate attraction of public. The system will operate through electronic programming of a suitable type that is user friendly and cost effective. In addition, technologies such as cloud computing will be used for enabling easy access and operational efficiency of the
